Day 3/31 days of #toddlerartinvitations

Invitation to experiment drawing on black paper using a variety of white implements. It’s really just the normal kind of drawing, but with a slight twist, an opposite version of it.

For the initial provocation, I used the book “Pantone: Colours“.

The idea came about because yesterday morning, the toddler attempted to use a piece of white chalk to draw on a normal piece of drawing paper and she couldn’t see the marks she made. So I explained to her how if she was using a light colour like white to draw with, she needed to do it on a dark background so it could stand out and I thought what better way for her to understand this concept than to let her play around with it.

For the drawing implements, I offered her thin chalk, sidewalk chalk, twistable crayon, oil crayon and pastels. To see a video of her discovering that she could smudge/blend the chalk and pastels by rubbing over them with her hands, click here. That little gasp of delight/surprise at the end, the sound of the joy of making discoveries, is music to my ears 😊
